About this event

    This 9 week course (August 25- October 31, 2025)will be useful to any paraprofessional working in an environment where you may interact and or support someone with a physical, intellectual and/or developmental disability. This course will explore the necessary technical knowledge to support social skills and integration, adaptation, self-dependence, health, safety, nutrition, recreation, leisure and communication for persons with disabilities. Topics covered include behavior management, functional skills, infection control, medication management, individual program planning and implementation and independent living.

    This course satisfies requirements for Part II of the San Diego Regional Center’s Residential Specialist Certificate.

    NOTE, this is a 9 week college-level course. Participants should expect to devote 4-10 hours per week to course work.

    Mode of Instruction: ONLINE- Materials and Assignments with Virtual Classroom Meetings during the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 7th weeks of class.

    About Our Instructors

    Janice Melroy, Ed.D:

    Dr. Janice Melroy has been in the disability and education field for more than 25 years. She has coordinated state and federally funded training and dissemination programs employing individuals with Developmental Disabilities, and taught Disability Services Management courses since 2004. Janice’s educational background includes: an A.S. degree in Disability Services Management from Grossmont College, a Bachelor’s degree in Vocational Education, Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling with emphasis on Rehabilitation Technology, and finally a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, with emphasis on Community College Leadership at San Diego State University. Her dissertation included research on the efficacy of Universal Design for Learning.
