About this event

The RNZAF Jazz Orchestra is one of the most electrifying big bands in the country, featuring a line-up of top jazz professionals from Wellington’s thriving music scene. The musical focus of the group is the tradition of swing and improvisation as well as fostering compositional talent from within its membership. On Sunday 15 August 2:30 pm, at Te Auaha’s Tapere Nui Theatre, this 17-piece big band will perform works by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, John Coltrane, Thad Jones, and others, as well as newly-composed pieces by members of the band themselves. After performing to two full houses at the Wellington Jazz Festival, the RNZAF Jazz Orchestra is thrilled to be back in action!

Organizer The Royal New Zealand Air Force Band

Organizer of Royal New Zealand Air Force Jazz Orchestra: Giants of Jazz

The Royal New Zealand Air Force Band has been a vital unit of the New Zealand Defence Force for more than eighty years. The band in its current form is made up of highly-skilled reservists; with many also performing with other leading ensembles ranging from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Wellington to Shapeshifter and the Rodger Fox Big Band.

The band maintains a regular schedule of ceremonial duties in Wellington, including parades to mark the arrival of international dignitaries and Anzac Day services. The bands’ buglers are currently responsible for servicing the daily Last Post ceremonies at the National War Memorial, commemorating 100 years since the First World War. Members of the band also provide music at significant commemorations around the world, with recent locations including Turkey, Crete, France and Belgium.

The full symphonic band tours to regions around New Zealand every year, as well as giving public concerts, performances in schools, coaching to local music students, and hosting charity events. The band also divides into a range of smaller ensembles, including a popular Jazz Orchestra, woodwind trio, clarinet quartet, and a range of brass ensembles. These groups are requested for a number of events throughout the year. There is also a growing catalogue of recordings of the band – the most recent release ‘From the Silver Screen’ is now available on iTunes.
