Inaugural anti-racism symposium and performing arts presentation, featuring activists and artists, on May 21, 22, 23, 2022.
About this event
This symposium is being organized by the West Coast Coalition Against Racism Society (WC-CARS). It will bring together activists and artists organizing against racism and related forms of oppression across BC. Each day will feature several panel discussions addressing key issues in anti-racist organizing.
Below is the schedule for each day:
May 21- 12:30pm-8:00pm Pitt Meadows Heritage Hall (12460 Harris Rd, Pitt Meadows, BC V3Y 2J5)
- 12:30-12:45 greeting
- 12:45-2:45pm: Food Sovereignty Panel - Tiffany Ayalik (producer of Food for the Rest of Us), Asha Wheeldon (Kula Kitchen), Dawn Morrison (Wild Salmon Defenders Alliance)
- 3-5pm: Labour Justice Panel - Stephanie Fung (UniteHere40),Prabhjot Kaur(Labour Organizer), Mary Grace De Guzma (board, Migrant Workers Centre), Christopher Sorio (Migrante BC)
- 5-6pm: Dinner served
- 6pm: Film Screening - Food for the Rest of Us .
May 22- 12pm-8pm Moberly Arts & Cultural Center (7646 Prince Albert St, Vancouver, BC V5X 3Z4)
- 12-1:45: Abolition Panel - Rabbit Richards (Organizer), Tonye Aganaba (Organizer, Moderator), Nasir Almasri (Palestinian Youth Movement), Hayley Dash (Asilu Collective)
- 2-3:45: Updates from Land/Water/Air Defenders (Panelists being finalized)
- 4-5:45: Racism in Health Care – Dr. Lolade Shipeolu (Black Physicians of BC), Tharuna Abu (Care Not Cops), Camille Bush (midwife, moderator)
- 6-7pm: Dinner served.
- 7pm Buckman Coe performance.
May 23- 2pm-9:30pm Japanese Language School & Hall (487 Alexander St, Vancouver, BC V6A 1C6)
- 2-3:45: MMIWG2S Panel – Members of the Butterflies in Spirit dance troupe.
- 4-5:45: Housing Justice Panel –(Panelists being finalized)
- 7-9:30pm: Performing Arts Evening - Onibana Taiko, Old Soul Rebel, Butterflies in Spirit.

In an attempt to make this event as accessible as possible, we require that all attendees wear a face mask at all times unless actively eating or drinking.
All venues are wheelchair accessible.

WC-CARS is a coalition of organizations and individuals committed to positive change in the struggle against racism. Our member organizations include: Canada Palestine Association, Social Justice Centre, South Asian Network for Secularism and Democracy, Hari Sharma Foundation, Poetic Justice Foundation, Independent Jewish Voices, and the South Asian Studies Institute at the University of the Fraser Valley.
