Event description

Description

Shabbat dinner at Archestratus Books + Foods explores the Jewish-Polish culinary legacy in the warm, communal atmosphere of a Friday night meal. Jeffrey Yoskowitz and Liz Alpern, co-founders of the Brooklyn-based food company, The Gefilteria, and co-authors of the celebrated Gefilte Manifesto cookbook, are curating the meal and designing a robust menu of Polish foods with Jewish origins (and vice versa). The duo draws Inspiration from their recent stint cooking and teaching in Poland and their years of research into eastern European Jewish cuisine. They will collaborate with guest Polish chef, Malika.

One of the foremost scholars of Polish Jewish food history, Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, Chief Curator of the core exhibition at award-winning POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, in Warsaw, will be joining as a special guest and collaborating on the menu.

Dinner will include four courses plus wine and a signature cocktail. Tax and gratuity are included in the ticket price.

* Meal will be kosher-style (no pork or shellfish served). Immediately following ticket purchase, event organizers will be in contact to find out about any dietary restrictions.

** This event was made possible through the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation's Grassroots Events program.

About Roots & Radishes

To mark one hundred years since regaining Polish Independence, the Polish Cultural Institute New York has teamed up with The Gefilteria, a Brooklyn-based venture that reimagines Old World Jewish Foods, to produce a Friday night pop-up Shabbat dinner and a Sunday afternoon family feast to explore the diversity of Polish cooking. In conjunction with Polish celebrity chef Malika, chef and owner of Malika in Gdynia, Poland, and author of the book “Przyprawy” – “Spices,” each meal will incorporate unique ingredients and share extraordinary stories of a robust and diverse culinary heritage.
