Description

Join the EJ Family Reunion!! Check out what we have planned for you!!

Youth Panel: Roots of Resistance through the lens of youth: This panel will explore how youth have taken a leadership role advocating for themselves and their communities. Representatives from Kern, Kings, Fresno, Madera and Merced will share the work they have done to improve their neighborhoods, what motivated them to be engaged and what changes they want to see in the future.

Community Science and Local Knowledge: The goal of this session is to explain what “Community Science” is, why it is important and how it has been done in different communities across the San Joaquin Valley. Kern, Kings and Fresno County residents who have been engaged in air quality data collection and other community monitoring efforts will share their experiences documenting the burden of pollution and using data to advocate for change.

Community Organizing:In light of the national context we are living where our communities are facing numerous threats in different fronts (i.e. healthcare, immigration, environment), this session will present practical strategies on how to build a sustainable community-base.

Strengthening Collaboration between Community Organizations and Researchers: Led by the UC Davis Environmental Health Science Center, this session will explain how to develop equitable community-based participatory research partnerships and how to identify levers to promote change with research.

Social Media as an Outreach Strategy:This interactive workshop is open to everyone who is working to improve or establish a sustainable online communications strategy to advance their work. Presenters will share best practices and share tools to self-manage online efforts and achieve greater impact. Participants will build their own Publishing Matrix to help coordinate their social media and other online communications channels.

Growing our Grassroot$:The goal of this session is to share grassroots fundraising tips (i.e. developing stronger & compelling proposals; individual donors, earned income, special events) and ways to start new organizations to support your EJ efforts.

Community in Action: From community enforcement to systemic change in disadvantaged communities: This session will focus on sharing stories that illustrate the power that the community has when it is given the proper tools and expertise to seek real change from regulatory agencies. Presenters will describe the IVAN community reporting model and how it has been used as a tool to create real change. You will hear from residents, regulatory representatives and local governments who have been partners in this type of community enforcement.

Children’s Workshops:The conference will offer children of all ages the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities that will include: craft-making using recyclable materials, science projects such as building robots with legos and basic Environmental Literacy through theater.
