Few Americans today understand the relationship between the world’s first black republic and the United States. The 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation offers us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate freedom and Haitian history and culture. The Central Square Theater in Cambridge is uniquely qualified to produce this cultural program.
The CST specializes in producing professional yet accessible theater focusing on history. Debra Wise, the artistic director of CST and member of the Cambridge-Haiti Sister City Committee presents this theatrical pageant celebrating both the legacy of the Haitian revolutionary hero, Toussaint Louverture, and the impact of the Haitian Revolution on the antislavery movement and the Civil War. Set at the historic Tremont Temple (where the Emancipation Proclamation was read in 1863) the historical spectacle will include Haitian dance and music, as well as original material by playwright Natalia Namen. Conversations are woven into the pageant’s creation while involving community members in the making of a giant Louverture puppet, on which will be collaged their reflections
The CST is very interested in partnering with various organizations across Cambridge. We are looking for groups that have a heavy influence and participation in their neighborhood’s activities to help network and promote Freedom Rising in order to ensure a large turnout on May 4th. In exchange we will also promote your organization by putting it into the show’s playbill and on the official event page. We are also willing to provide your organization advance tickets to the free show so members of your community can reserve a spot
