About this event
ROOTED: Stories of Belonging Inspired by Asian Elders in the Bay Area - is Ferocious Lotus' first community-centered project. In response to the violent attacks against Asian elders, our company was compelled to create a performance that promotes healing and displays the humanity of the many seniors who often go unseen and unheard. By uplifting the diverse stories and voices of our elders, we advocate for their care and well-being. These stories explore what it means to belong to and identify with one’s own community.
We’ve partnered with the Oakland Chinatown Oral History Project, Self-Help for the Elderly, API Equality Northern California and the Tessaku Project to collect oral histories of our local Asian elders. ROOTED is a devised series of short pieces created by our artists based on these oral histories.
The performance will take place Sunday, June 13 from 2-3pm. Immediately following the performance there will be a community conversation with three panel members - Roy Chan from the Oakland Chinatown Oral History Project, Winnie Yu from Self-Help for the Elderly and Diana Tsuchida from the Tessaku Project who will discuss the process of compiling oral history projects and the needs of Asian elders given the recent anti-Asian violence in our communities.
