Event description

Description

Ron Stallworth was a young police detective in Colorado Springs when he happened upon a stunning assignment: infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan. In 1979, Stallworth spotted a newspaper advertisement recruiting new members to the white supremacist group. He posed as a racist and responded to the ad, launching a nine-month investigation into the organization as an undercover officer. The biggest surprise of all: Stallworth is black. His story is captured in a 2014 autobiography that was adapted into the recently released Spike Lee film,"BlacKkKlansman.”

The Hill House Association is proud to host Stallworth on November 14, 2018 for a discussion of his stunning story and its relevance to the present day United States. Reading through news headlines today shows that some of the same issues of racial prejudice and division that Stallworth encountered are still very much present. There is a recent resurgence of white supremacy rhetoric and rallies that has left many Americans feeling unsettled. We aim for this event to not only spread Stallworth’s incredible story, but provide a forum for exploring some of these very topical issues.

In recent years, the Hill House Association’s Live from the Hill series has featured African American artists, musicians, performers and authors in an effort to showcase talent from underrepresented communities. This presentation carries special significance because of its relevance to political and social challenges facing the country today. Stallworth’s discussion is not intended to be divisive or antagonistic. It is also not intended to be political in nature. But his experience and life story can nevertheless shine a unique light on the current state of our nation. We believe attendees will leave feeling better educated and more enlightened.
