Event description

Description

Harlem School of the Arts in partnership with The Romare Bearden Foundation presents the third installment of the Romare Bearden Cinque Artist Series, an artist talk and conversation with Xaviera Simmons.

Xaviera Simmons’s body of work spans photography, performance, video, sound, sculpture and installation. She defines her studio practice as an ongoing investigation of experience, memory, abstraction, present and future histories-specifically shifting notions surrounding landscape-as cyclical rather than linear. For Prospect 4 in New Orleans, she made sculpture, photography, large scale text based works and a community based food project.

Tuesday, January 9, 2018
HSA Gallery • 6:00 pm-8:00 pm
Free and open to the public. Seating is limited.

Xaviera Simmons received her BFA from Bard College (2004) after spending two years on a walking pilgrimage retracing the Transatlantic slave trade with Buddhist monks. She completed the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program in Studio Art (2005) while simultaneously completing a two-year actor-training conservatory with The Maggie Flanigan Studio. Simmons has exhibited and performed nationally and internationally including at The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, The Public Art Fund, The Sculpture Center, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, Brooklyn Museum, and more. Her works are in major museum and private collections including The Museum of Modern Art, The Nasher Museum, Deutsche Bank, The Rubell Family Collection, The Guggenheim Museum, The Agnes Gund Art Collection, The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Perez Art Museum Miami, and others.

About the Foundation:
The Romare Bearden Foundation is the non-profit organization, established in 1990 to perpetuate the intellectual and artistic legacies of Romare Bearden (1911-1988). They support the creative development, and education of talented aspiring artists, while preserving, and making publicly accessible, Bearden's art and ideals. Romare Bearden is widely acknowledged as one of the most talented and original visual artists of the twentieth century. For over twenty-five years the Foundation has honored the artist's memory by producing public programs, supporting special projects, exhibitions, and critical scholarship that deepen appreciation of and access to Bearden's extraordinary art and life.
