Event description

Description

Be part of a community of professionals in London who are keen to support social impact projects in Romania!

Our inaugural edition in 2018 raised £7,500 for 3 Romanian charities (Minte Forte, Asociația Love for Life, ACTEDO).

This year we will be hosting 3 new guests:

  • Oxford for Romania - summer school that takes place in Oxford, UK, aiming to be an eye-opening learning experience for Romanian high school students with great academic potential and limited financial means
  • Love, Light, Romania - provides support services to children, teenagers & families affected by HIV/AIDS, working to stop cycles of poverty in disadvantaged family communities
  • Fundația ADEPT - works to give the High Nature Value Farmed Landscapes of Transylvania and their communities an economic future and relevance in the 21st century without sacrificing their sustainability and productivity

Timing: 6pm - drinks and canapés served, 6:40pm start, presentations and pledges until 8pm, followed by networking until 9pm.

Format: Guests will hear a 5-minute pitch from each organisation, ask questions, and then make pledges to the organisations of their choice. There is no obligation to give on the day of the event. Donations will be Gift Aid eligible.

In addition to the charity pitches, we will also hear from Aura Woodward, Charity Ambassador and former Executive Director of The Prince of Wales’s Foundation Romania.

This event is organised by GRASP London in partnership with The Funding Network.

The event will be in English and you are encouraged to bring friends of all nationalities who have an interest in Romania.

FAQ

What is the format of the event?

The giving circle follows the model of The Funding Network, which organises "live crowdfunding" events where individuals see charities pitch and then make pledges. In the UK, The Funding Network (TFN) has raised more than £11 million for 1,750 projects since 2002. In Brussels, the Romanian Funding Network has raised €30,000 for 9 projects across 3 events.

For an example of how this works in practice, see this video.

For further information on the format of the event, and for updates, please follow our Facebook page: Cercul Donatorilor Londra.

I can't make it. How can I support?

You can make an offline donation via this link. Be sure to indicate in the notes field how much you would like to allocate to each organisation. Your name and donation will be called out at the event unless you choose to donate anonymously.

You can also support by inviting friends. Finally, you can sign up for updates (about the impact of the donations and future events). To receive updates, please follow our Facebook page: Cercul Donatorilor Londra, or email us at cercul.donatorilor.londra@gmail.com.

What impact did last year's event have?

Last year we raised £7,500 from 70 participants for the following charities, which achieved the following:

  • Minte Forte - ran a socio-emotional education and development program with 24 high-school students from Cluj. Participants shared that "we became like a family" and "I went from 'I can't' to 'I'll try'"
  • Love for Life - ran workshops in 60 schools (which collectively teach around 35,000 students), walked 1,200km to raise awareness, and met with the Minister for Education.
  • ACTEDO - extended the Pro Bono lawyer network working on human rights issues to 81 lawyers and facilitated access to the justice system for 11 individuals whose rights had been broken

How were the charities selected?

We started by gathering nominations from community foundations in Romania and from members. 8 organisations were invited to submit a brief proposal. A group of GRASP members met to review and score all proposals. To qualify for the event each organisation had to demonstrate good governance and clear objectives, yet be of the size where financial support of up to £3,000 could be transformative for the community they serve.

If you would like to nominate a charity for a future event, please get in touch.

How much am I expected to give?

After the pitches we will invite members to pledge money to one or more charities, starting at £25 per pledge. There is no obligation to make a donation on the evening if you are not compelled by the pitches. You can also give anonymously.

Will this be in English or Romanian?

Our inaugural event was in Romanian, but this year's event will be in English, to make it as accessible as possible to our non-Romanian friends.

What does the event fee cover?

The £10 fee covers costs associated with the catering, travel for our guests, and other logistical/operational expenses.

What's the refund policy?

If your plans change, you can get a refund for your ticket up to a week before the event. After that you can ask a friend to join in your place.
