Event description
Roma Environmental Justice Conference - Lack of environmental services, exposure to pollution and health impacts

About this Event

While research in different areas of the world has shown that environmental harm resulting in negative health and human rights impacts disproportionately affect indigenous people and ethnic minorities, the Roma have not received due attention on this issue, neither in the media nor in policy-making. Even the Fundamental Rights Agency in its latest report on anti-gypsyism does not address Roma communities’ environmental discrimination. Furthermore, the problem of environmental discrimination is not considered or even mentioned in relevant policies such as the EU Framework for National Roma Integration Strategies up to 2020 and its national implementation.

In its recent study analysing the causes of the poor health of Roma, EPHA highlighted the uneven distribution of environmental and social determinants of health as one of the main reasons for the major health discrepancies between this community and the rest of the European population. Evidence consistently shows higher rates of illness and mortality among Roma linked to poor housing conditions, higher exposure to air, water and ground pollution, poor diets, higher vulnerability to food insecurity. Poor health of Roma communities is a persistent issue representing a challenge not only for the empowerment of this population but also for the EU policy makers Health inequalities faced by Roma have major consequences both for Roma communities and EU countries, in terms of loss of economic productivity, competitiveness, social cohesion and demographic change.

The objective of the conference is to create a higher awareness of environmental determinants of health, such as environmental discrimination against Roma communities and its impact on health to set the issue on the European and national political agenda. The conference further allows for the first exchange between European and national policymakers, researchers, civil society and Roma to create a systematic understanding of health inequalities and environmental discrimination, two closely related issues, and to discuss solutions and policy options to address these public health and environmental issues.

Detailed agenda will be published soon.
