Event description

Description

Most health professionals understand that postpartum depression (PPD) and other mood disorders are a serious mental health concern, yet more women struggle with postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) than you might think.

This workshop is designed to help clinicians safely learn to explore the importance of becoming more proactive with evaluation and diagnosis. Participants will have the opportunity to present cases or scenarios and process their struggles in treatment. We will address the very real issue of how to treat women who are terrified to admit that they are in crisis and hiding their struggle with overwhelming anxiety, worry, and depression. We will also process how their silent struggle puts the healthy development of children and the long-term wellbeing of all family members at great risk.

Most importantly, we will look at postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) through a trauma-informed lens. This approach provides the greatest benefit to our clients, as women experience PMADs as traumatic, and women with a prior trauma history are more at risk for developing PMADs. As we pay attention to the symptoms instead of just the narrative, participants will gain a deeper understanding of why perinatal mental health issues can be re-framed as traumatic experiences. Participants will come away from this training empowered with a trauma-informed approach tailored to maternal mental health, thus giving women with postpartum trauma the effective and healing support they need.
