About this event

When the nature reserve at Cold Canyon in Northern California went up in flames in 2015 and again in 2020, Robin Lee Carlson embarked on a five-year journey to learn the legacy of the burn.

What she saw challenged prevailing assumptions about the destructive impact of wildfire, and with a new fire season on the horizon, her debut book The Cold Canyon Fire Journals — on sale August 2 via Heyday —opens our eyes to see that beneath the burn and beyond our despair lies another story.

Join us at the Library as Carlson discusses her experience and the book, which include her beautiful illustration focusing on the details of plant, animal, and fungi responses to fires.

Can't make it? Or you're going to make it but want a teaser? Then listen to Magnus' chat with Robin on the Big Sur Podcast HERE!

"This is a story of fire as a source of transformation and renewal, rewriting wildfire as an elemental power that does not destroy the diverse habitats of California but nourishes them," Carlson says.

"My artistic and scientific journey led me to a new understanding of how we must live in relationship to the land. With fire suppression and climate change undermining the regenerative work of wildfire, this story of ecological kinship is an urgent one, showing us how cultivating intimacy with our natural world teaches us what we need to do to sustain it.

We gather at 3 PM.

We have coffee and tea!

Donations always graciously accepted.

Welcome!
