Monday, October 9, 2017 || 2:30 – 4:00 PM

Robert Winterbottom is a forester and natural resources management consultant committed to empowering people and building institutional capacity to address the major challenges of sustainable development. Bob has broad experience in environmental sciences and economic development, working in Africa, South Asia and Central America on issues of desertification control, tropical deforestation, and community-based natural resource management.  Bob was a Peace Corps volunteer in a community reforestation program in Burkina Faso, and worked on the Ecology and Forestry team of the Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS) in the 1970’s. He contributed to the first World Resources Report, the preparation of the Tropical Forestry Action Plan, and served as the first Director of the Forestry and Land Use program at the World Resources Institute in the 1980’s. Over a span of 20 years, Bob led the implementation of USAID rural development projects in Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Niger, Senegal and Bangladesh.  In 2011, Bob rejoined WRI to manage the Mainstreaming Ecosystem Services Initiative and assessments of opportunities to restore stocks and flows of a range of ecosystem services. He most recently served as a WRI Senior Fellow based in Washington, D.C. working on the Global Restoration Initiative to restore the productivity of degraded landscapes by scaling up “regreening” and the sustainable management of natural resources.
