Acclaimed Hudson Valley writer/musician Robert Burke Warren unveils the soundtrack to his coming-of-age song cycle, Redheaded Friend, with a CD release and performance of the one-man show of the same name. He’ll also debut the video for single “At the Rocky Horror Picture Show,” and perform additional material into the night.

The Redheaded Friend album, produced by Rosendale-based Grammy winner Dean Jones, marks a return for RBW. While he’s gained renown for SRO tribute shows to Bowie, Leonard Cohen, and Johnny Cash, RBW hasn’t released music bearing his name since 2004’s Lazyeye. That album coincided with the creation of his family music persona Uncle Rock, a lark that became a living. Five CDs, one DVD, satellite radio hits, song placements in film, and innumerable performances followed. After a break to concentrate on writing, his (very adult) novel, Perfectly Broken, was published in 2015. RBW began taking part in story slams, focusing on his unconventional 70s and 80s childhood. He employed acting chops honed as a pro in the ‘90s, a career that culminated in portraying Buddy Holly in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story in London’s West End.

With Redheaded Friend, he’s combined it all – writing, songwriting, singing, guitar/bass playing, and acting – into musical memoir set in post-Civil Rights Act, pre-AIDS Atlanta. Through song and story, we follow fatherless, free-range RBW as he finds courage in an emboldening friendship with a strange red haired boy named Todd. Through this relationship, RBW learns how music can help him escape a violent, dysfunctional life. It’s a story of latchkey kids, southern belles, thrift store cross dressers, new wave funk, and steadfast nerd love as deliverance. RBW performs the entire show solo.

Stylistically, the accompanying Redheaded Friend album mixes all he’s done – rock with the Fleshtones, new wave with RuPaul, acoustic rockabilly and stage acting with The Buddy Holly Story, and singer-songwriter depth honed over years of intimate gigs. Now, however, the songs, like the stories, are once again RBW’s, and the Redheaded Friend soundtrack will be at the merch table (and available as a download too, of course).

“I’m thrilled to be back in this particular saddle,” RBW says. “It’s been a long time coming, but the timing feels exactly right.”
