Event description

Description

Save the dates February 12-16, 2018 as we just secured spaces at Manatee Springs State Park in Florida for a great Roadtreking Gathering that will get us into the warm Florida sun and give us a chance to see the winter location for hundreds of gentle Florida manatees.

There will be kayak rentals available, lots of exploring, socializing, nature programs and a wonderful catered meal by our friends at Sunshine State RVs in Gainesville, FL, who will even have an RV technician come by to help with any minor issues anyone may be experiencing.

The beautiful spring at this park produces an average of 100 million gallons of crystal clear water daily. Because of its constant 72-degree weather, every winter West Indian manatees swim upriver to the warmer waters of the springs.

There are few animals as universally popular and liked as much as the Florida Manatee. Yet there are few animals in more danger.

The West Indian Manatee, a large and slow moving aquatic animal, is protected by the federal Engangered Species Act of 1973, primarily because they are too big and slow to get out of the way of speedboats. As Florida's boating population has exploded, the manatee has declined to an estimated statewide population today of under 5,000. Because the animals have slowly been migrating northward, they are particularly vulnerable to cold winter weather.

They used to be everywhere. And despite gallant efforts by wildlife managers to protect it, each year there are fewer and fewer.

That’s why places like Mantee Springs State Park are so important, giving these gentle giants a protected place in warm water to be safe and secure

Besides manatees, this park is very popular for snorkeling and scuba diving and the headwaters of the spring are also a great spot for swimming. The spring run forms a sparkling stream that meanders through hardwood wetlands to the Suwannee River.

Like all our Roadtreking gatherings, this event will be limited to about 30 RVs. That way, we’re able to all get to know each other and organization doesn’t become a huge task. We are open to people on all types of RVs and there are no membership requirements.

Refer to the campground map here to locate a spot but don't make reservations through that site; make your reservations here.

Please note that some of the spaces are small (15'), and others are tent sites, which may not be level. If you have a small RV, consider one of the tiny sites.
