Description

The Road to Recovery: Supporting Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Who Have Experienced Trauma

Presented by: SAFE, a merger of Austin Children’s Shelter and SafePlace in Austin/Travis County

When: July 31st and August 1st from 8:30am-4:30pm

Where: Health and Human Services Commission's Brown Heatly Building, 4900 N. Lamar Blvd., Public Hearing Rooms, Austin, TX, 78751

You are invited to attend a two-day train-the-trainer institute designed to teach basic knowledge, skills and values related to working with children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who have had traumatic experiences. Attendees will learn how to use this knowledge to support children’s safety, well-being and recovery through trauma-informed practices.

This training is designed for educators and service providers in the fields of mental health, disability service, child welfare and protection, domestic violence, sexual assault and education; and others involved in the care of children with disabilities who have experienced abuse, neglect, medical trauma, abandonment, bullying and other traumatic events. Through this train-the-trainer model, attendees will be able to share the knowledge they’ve gained to improve the lives of children with IDD who’ve experienced trauma by building capacity in their local community.

Training topics include:

  • Understanding child traumatic stress and its relationship to children with IDD
  • The impact of trauma on children’s behavior, development and relationships
  • Assessment of a child’s traumatic experiences
  • Providing support to the child, family and caregivers
  • Working across systems
  • Managing professional and personal stress

This training is a collaborative effort of the Health and Human Services Commission's Office of Disability Prevention for Children and Office of Mental Health Coordination, the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health at the University of Texas at Austin, the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, and SAFE, a merger of Austin Children’s Shelter and SafePlace in Austin/Travis County.

Social work and LPC CEUs available upon request at registration.
