RJS Presents... Plunky & The Universal Ensemble!

Tuesday, September 10th

Simply stated, J. Plunky Branch is a music icon. He has influenced multiple musical genres for over 50 years. 40 years ago, Plunky was the inspiration for the founding of Richmond Jazz Society. Early in his career Plunky would sometimes perform with a smaller group, called the Universal Jazz Quartet. Joining him on September 10th will be members of that ensemble - vocalist Lady Eka-Ete (Jacqueline Holoman Lewis) and legendary Ghanaian percussionist Okyerema Asante. Pianist Dr. Weldon Hill and other guest musicians will round out this unique reunion concert!

Plunky's musical philosophy is based on the African principle that music should be functional, collective and transcendental. Because he has felt the transformative power of various styles of music in his life, he continues to convey that type of experience to his audiences.
