River Road Church E. Carl Freeman Concert Series Presents
Arcadelt Ensemble: Songs of Love and Strife
Arcadelt Ensemble formed in the spring of 2015 when four musicians, from diverse backgrounds, gathered to sing some of their favorite music. The group performs music from all eras, but focuses chiefly on unaccompanied vocal works of the Renaissance. The name ‘Arcadelt’ refers to the composer Jacques Arcadelt, who penned some of the music the quartet sang in their earliest rehearsals. Jacques Arcadelt's music greatly contributed to the increasing popularity of the madrigal outside of Italy.
Since Arcadelt Ensemble's premiere concert in February 2016, the group has been very busy performing at various Richmond events and venues, including an accompanied performance of a Mozart mass for Classical Revolution RVA's annual Mozart Festival. In December, the group had its first mini-tour, delivering two full-length programs in Virginia's Tidewater region.
This program features:
- Motets of Palestrina, Anerio and Victoria
- Madrigals of Wilbye, di Lasso and Janequin
- Dramatic sacred settings by Hugo Wolf
- Contemporary works of Richard Rodney Bennett, Ola Gjeilo, and William Bradley Roberts
