Event description
The Jones River Watershed Association welcomes you to the Jones River Trading Post to celebrate the removal of the Elm Street Dam.

About this Event

Not long after the arrival of the Pilgrims the Jones River was dammed. The power of the river was harnessed for industry and that power was instrumental in developing our fledgling nation. Unfortunately, the damming of our waterways took a terrible toll on many native species such as smelt, river herring, shad, and more.

After nearly 400 years of impact the populations of many native species have plummeted as has the usefulness of many Massachusetts dams. To correct this imbalance, the Jones River Watershed Association championed an initiative to remove one of these dams; and at long last the Elm Street Dam is gone. The ecological damage caused by the obstruction of the Jones River is one step closer to being healed.

This project would not have been possible without the monetary support and expertise of our partners, the careful planning of our engineers at Stantec, or the hard work of our contractor, SumCo.

To commemorate the conclusion of the project, we would like to welcome you to tour site and enjoy some light refreshments.
