Common Questions:

What is a Rites of Passage Experience?

A five day/four night, formative experience provided in nature that utilizes rituals, ceremonies, contemplative practices, small groups, and wisdom teachings to guide us into mature masculinity and the journey of a lifetime.

Rites of Passage is…

  • An experiential journey about awakening and identity
  • An opportunity to explore life’s hurts, disappointments, and suffering
  • A process to begin and a journey to enjoy
  • An invitation for self-reflection, self-renewal, self-discovery
  • A safe place to embrace uncertainty, paradox, mystery, and surrender
  • A chance to discover your uniqueness and gifts to be shared with the world

Rites of Passage is not…

  • A retreat with a lot of teachings/lectures
  • A workshop with a set agenda or desired outcome of how you should now live
  • A religious retreat intended for you to be saved, fixed, or rescued
  • A self-help experience with easy answers and formulas to learn and follow

What is required of me?

An open heart, an open mind, and a willingness to set aside your fixed beliefs.

We ask that you come in the spirit of curiosity and be a willing participant from start to finish. Our desire is not to make you less manly, or more feminine. Our desire is to offer you more wholeness, more humanity, and more freedom in your life and significant relationships.

What should I wear? What’s with the clothing requirements?

If you missed the clothing requirements, please see above. You should dress comfortably, bringing multiple layers for temperature comfort. Activities will be both indoor and outdoor. Being out in nature is an essential component of your experience. The black and white shirts are necessary for you and your fellow attendees to get the most out of your experience.

Who is Paul Young? Have you heard of the book or movie, The Shack?

Paul is a New York Times bestselling author, friend of HeartConnexion, and an incredibly wise and compassionate man. Paul is coming to share in this experience and guide us in alternative wisdom teaching for the male spiritual journey. Visit www.wmpaulyoung.com for more info on Paul or check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5GZ2m74wOc&t=21s

What is HeartConnexion Ministries?

Is Rites of Passage for Men affiliated with a certain belief system, denomination? HeartConnexion Ministries was founded in 1997 and has been offering spiritual formation and experiential seminars in the KC area ever since. Visit www.heartconnexion.org for more info. Rites of Passage for Men is in partnership with and under the guidance of HCS. ROP is not affiliated with a religious organization or denomination. We have no desire to tell you how to live or what to believe, but to invite you into a space of exploration, discovery, and community.

Do I need to prepare anything in advance? Simply complete the intake form provided in your welcome packet. Then, show up (literally and figuratively).

Can meals be modified for those with dietary restrictions? Yes – we will be able to work with you and provide meals to meet your needs

What are the lodging arrangements? The lodging will be in cabins with twin size bunk beds.

Are there any physical requirements for the training? No. Specific aspects of the experience will be modified for those with physical activity restrictions.

What exactly will we be doing? We would hate to ruin your experience by providing every last detail. Part of this journey is venturing into and accepting uncertainty. We ask that you trust us. Nothing you will do or participate in is dangerous or unsafe.

This sounds sort of cryptic or even like a cult. Is that true? We do not judge anyone’s lifestyle choices or beliefs, but we can confirm no one involved in the training are members of a cult. Rites of Passage practices and rituals have existed for thousands of years and have proven to be a valuable instrument for personal growth and spiritual formation. If anything in the description resonates with you, we strongly encourage you to attend.

What happens next? Great question. Once you register, you will receive an email confirmation. Once the date of the experience gets closer, you will be contacted and sent a complete packing list, instructions, and forms to fill out. While the event does not take place until May 15, 2019, we do have a monthly gathering for Men that meets every 3rd Thursday in Olathe, KS. Visit www.heartconnexion.org for full details.
