Rise Up: The Evolution of Women and the Democratic Process
Event Information
About this Event
Every third Thursday of the month, the Virginia Council for Social Studies hosts a virtual meeting called "Scholars' Hour" in which teachers from around the state can gather to discuss social studies content, strategies, and technology.
This month, our topic is the evolution of women in the American democratic process.
From the fight for suffrage prior to 1920 to the election of the first female Vice President of the United States in 2020, women have been an integral part of the American democratic tradition since the nation's founding. But the Time's Up and Black Lives Matter movements have shown us that there is still room for improvement in how our democratic system treats women, especially women of color. Join our panel of women experts, both scholars and elected officials, as we discuss women's history in American democracy and ways to get our female students excited to engage in civic action.
