We welcome you to join Winter Garden's year-long community dialogue/workshop series, RISE: Conversations On Race & Unity.

This community-wide event, hosted by Oasis Church Winter Garden and facilitated by Valencia College’s Peace and Justice Institute (PJI), in partnership with the Orlando Mayor's MLK Commission and Roper Co-Op Ballroom, will provide a safe space to focus on our shared humanity with an exploration of race, privilege, bias, systems of privilege and oppression, and practical application.

Refreshments will be served.

WORKSHOP DETAILS:

Session 1: Waking Up to Our Shared Humanity
Through story this workshop offers Principles for How We Treat Each Other, practices of respect and community building that facilitate honest dialogue among us. The Principles create a setting for deep listening and honest sharing that strengthen relationships.

Session 2: Understanding Bias
Are you aware of your hidden bias and how it affects you? Learn about the emerging science of implicit bias, along with strategies and tools to skillfully navigate Implicit Bias, Fundamental Attribution Error, and Confirmation Bias. Participants will be given opportunities in a safe setting to temporarily put aside their own perspectives in order to listen non-judgmentally to the experiences of others.

Session 3: Conversations on Race
Conversations on Race invites participants to discuss the topic of race and how it affects each of us in our daily lives. Addressing one of the hidden histories in our community, red-lining creates new awareness about systemic racism and helps frame the learning as we consider action steps to help us move toward more equitable communities.

Session 4: Understanding Privilege
In this session, participants gain an understanding of what is meant by privilege (unearned advantage) and explore multiple areas of privilege, including white privilege. The workshop teaches that all people experience unearned privilege as well as disadvantages and allows people space and time to share personal stories in a disarming safe environment. Honoring every story and treating each other with dignity and respect are modeled in this safe environment.


Session 5: Family and Race
Across the nation, people are hearing and participating in discussions race and culture in the media and the public domain, moving beyond shame and blame, this workshop invites participants to explore methods to discuss race in private within the family and personal spheres of influences.

Session 6: Moving into Action: Make a Difference
In this culminating workshop, participants work within groups with conflict scenarios from the community, to analyze the scenarios, consider common pitfalls of addressing these conflicts and explore more positive approaches.
