Event description

Description

You are cordially invited to this Jails Action Coalition (JAC) event, located at Cardozo School of Law, where a panel discussion will be held on "Rikers Island, NYC Department of Corrections: Present and Future".

JAC is a coalition of activists that includes formerly incarcerated and currently incarcerated people, family members and other community members who are working to promote human rights, dignity and safety for people in New York City jails. Our goals include:

  • Increasing transparency in Department of Correction (DOC) policies and accountability for DOC practices and abuses;
  • Ending the use of solitary confinement;
  • Ensuring adequate medical and mental health treatment for people in NYC jails and access to continuing care in the community upon release;
  • Eliminating sexual abuse and sexual assault in NYC jails;
  • Improving the visit process at the NYC jails;
  • Advocating for more rehabilitative services in NYC jails to promote reintegration; and
  • Combating the racist and discriminatory policies that lead to mass incarceration.

What has JAC accomplished since it formed in December 2011?

  • Successfully advocated for 16 and 17 year olds not to be placed in solitary confinement;
  • Successfully advocated for legislation to require more transparency about the use of solitary confinement in the City jails;
  • Persuaded the Board of Correction (Board) to develop rules to limit the use of solitary confinement;
  • Persuaded the Board to limit changes to Board Standards on visits, packages and punitive segregation;
  • Brought to light the horrendous conditions in the NYC jails through rallies and vigils and testimony at City Council hearings and Board meetings;
  • Held the Board accountable for fulfilling its function as an oversight agency;
  • Persuaded the Board to allow time for public comments at its meetings.

JAC has gathered criminal justice, mental health and justice involved youth experts, along with directly impacted individuals- to discuss the current state of Rikers Island, the reported closure, Raise The Age and what all of this will mean for our youth (16, 17 years of age) and communities.

We believe in community unity and that the most important voice is of those directly impacted. We believe as leaders in our communities and professional fields, it is our duty to help educate you and assist in preparing your communities to understand exactly what is occurring within the NYC Department of Corrections and NY State Court Systems.

Present and Future of Rikers Island, featuring:

- Dr. Robert Cohen, NYC Board of Correction
- Connie Grier, founder of the RESPECT Aliiance
- Elizabeth Powers, Director of Youth Justice, Children’s Defense Fund NY
- Tamika Graham, #CLOSErikers campaign leader
+ other guests!

Discussion moderated by Alexander Reinert, Esq, Professor of Law & Director, Center for Rights and Justice at Cardozo

Please RSVP today and share amongst your networks. Thank you in advance.
