In every content area every year at The Laboratory School of Finance & Technology (07X223) students complete literacy-rich authentic assessments (Performance-Based Assessment Tasks - or PBATs) that drive instruction. These teacher-designed assessments embody high expectations around real-world application of content-based literacy, skills, concepts, and higher-order thinking. Both the skills and content reflect the school’s commitment to equity, empowering students with research and communication tools connected to standards and embedded in an exploration of real world application and social justice issues. Integral to preparing students for success on their performance tasks - and beyond - are the reading and discussion routines teachers are consistently honing.

During this visit, participants will visit classrooms across content areas to observe reading and discussion routines in action, hear testimonials from educators and students, explore the design of performance tasks and resulting student work, and understand how the performance tasks impact instruction and support student engagement and growth. Participants will also have time to consider how they will apply key takeaways from the visit to their own school contexts.

Educators interested in rigorous authentic assessment tasks, reading and discussion routines, or an equity lens are encouraged to attend. This visit aligns well with Quality Review indicators 1.1 Curriculum, 1.2 Pedagogy, and 2.2 Assessment, as well as a range of indicators from Danielson Domains 1 (Planning & Preparation) and 3 (Instruction).
