Customer Service Chatbot Challenge

This is a terrific opportunity to showcase your business and technology skills. RightAnswers, the leading Knowledge Management technology company, headquartered in Edison, NJ, is collaborating with Monmouth University on a unique competition to build a Customer Service Chatbot.

The Competition: Build a Customer Service Chatbot using Knowledge from the RightAnswers API

The challenge is for teams comprised of 3-5 Monmouth University students each to build a chatbot that handles a real-world customer service problem. Demonstrate your business acumen by making a compelling business case for how your chatbot can provide real value for both customers and customer support organizations.


  • The first place team will be awarded $1,500
  • Additional prizes to be determined 

Judging Criteria 

  • Usefulness of the chatbot in handling a real world customer support problem
  • Quality of business analysis and research for the size of the problem
  • Innovative use of existing knowledge in the knowledgebase and / or creation of your own knowledge articles
  • Creative use of Natural Language Processing (NLP) 


The event will be judged by the RightAnswers Executive Management team including

  • Jeffrey Weinstein, President and CEO
  • Keith Berg, VP Product Development and Professional Services
  • Simon Yelsky, VP Product Management and Pre-Sales


Max of 5 people per team comprised of 

  • 1-2 MBA or senior undergraduate business school students
  • 2-3 developers in either the graduate or undergraduate Computer Science or Software Engineering Program

Rules and Guidelines

Register here by December 6th, 2016 using your Monmouth University email address

Attend the RightAnswers Presentation on the Competition at 5pm December 6th in Young Auditorium - 113 Bey Hall Monmouth University to learn more, ask questions and form teams

Teams submit their chatbot idea by January 16th, 2017 with a team name, list of members, explanation of what your bot will do and the customer support problem it will handle, and what messaging platform(s) it will run on - Skype, Slack, Facebook Messenger, iMessage, SMS, etc.

Submit your chatbot by January 28

Include the following:

  • An explanation of what your bot does and the customer service problem it addresses.
  • Why your bot is viable in the market. Provide research, survey results, analysis, market sizing and predictions of why the type of bot you built could get traction in the marketplace
  • Business and technical reasons for the messaging platform you choose
  • A video demonstration of your bot
  • Instructions for how to run and test your bot. Include the source code or provide a link to the source on Github

Presentation and Awards Reception on February 4th, 2017

  • Welcome and keynote by Monmouth University and RightAnswers President and CEO Jeff Weinstein
  • Team presentations and demos of their bot and their business analysis
  • Q&A with the judges
  • Reception and networking
  • Judges announce winner

Resources Available Throughout the Competition

  • A RightAnswers Product Manager will be assigned to your team for weekly status checks
  • Teams will have the opportunity to present their progress to RightAnswers senior management during the contest to receive mentoring and get feedback and advice.
  • RightAnswers API documentation and sample code
  • RightAnswers Solution Manager documentation for creating knowledge articles used by your chatbot
  • List of chatbot platforms and NLP tools
