Event description

Description

Art historian Mathijs Meinderts will present DE STIJL, a global art movement that was founded by Theo van Doesburg in 1917 in the Netherlands and attracted many artists, including Piet Mondriaan. Mathijs will present DE STIJL with a specific focus on the extraordinary story of Gerrit Rietveld, an Utrecht native and architect of the famous Rietveld Schröder house. This is a Portland/Utrecht Friendship City cultural event.

Mathijs studied Art History at University of Utrecht, and has since been working extensively with the Centraal Museum and the Rietveld Schröder house, both located in Utrecht. Especially last year (2017) as part of the '100 Jaar De STIJL' celebration, Matthijs gave many lectures on Rietveld and DE STIJL throughout the Netherlands.

Ticket holders are encouraged to come early to take a closer look at the De Stijl painting Tree by Theo Van Doesburg which will be available for viewing from 5:15-6:30 p.m. prior to the lecture.

The lecture will be followed by a reception where you can informally mingle with Mathijs, actress Audrey Bolder and and other guests from Utrecht for our Exposing DE STIJL week.
