Ride Side by Side (RSbS) is a new cycle taxi that's launching on the 18th April. It's a service for older people or people with issues of mobility who actively want to get somewhere — the hospital, to friends or around the local area.
The free service will start on 18th April in Hackney and will run every Tuesday through Spring and Summer.
We provide a side-by-side bike and a trained cyclist to get you to places in Hackney. You can choose to pedal some or all of the journey or just sit back and relax and enjoy the ride! The four wheel bike has been specially made for Ride Side by Side. It is extremely stable, has comfortable seat and a trunk for shopping.
The service operates in a two mile radius around Hackney Town Hall E8 1EA. Each Ride Side By Side slot is two hours in length. The slots are:
Am I eligible for Ride Side by Side?
You are eligible if you:
- are over 60 with no upper age limit
- are of any age with a disability (but able to transfer to a cycle by putting some weight on their feet).
- are of any age with a diagnosis of dementia
- are of any age with learning difficulties
- live in sheltered housing
- live in a care home
- live alone and meet any of the above criteria
- Be users of the current Dial a Ride scheme or Taxi Card service
Where can I travel to?
The service operates within a two miles radius of Hackney Town Hall E8 1EA. So we can pick you up at a location within two miles of the Town Hall - then cycle with you to your local shops, park, friends or hospital and return you either back to where we picked you up (or another location so long as again it's within that two mile radius). All within a two hour slot.
What should I wear?
We recommend that people wear trousers and comfortable outdoor wear/coats if its cold.
Do I have to pedal?
You can just sit back and enjoy the ride, pedal a little or a lot! The bicycle allows you to pedal as much or as little as you want.
What if the weather is bad?
If the weather is very bad we will contact you to reschedule.
Can the bike carry bags?
We have storage at the front and back of the cycle big enough for a week's worth of shopping and mobility aids.
