Event description

Description

Please note: Youth arrival is expected Sunday, July 7th 2:00-4:00pm. Check-in and cabin assignments will take place at that time and dinner will be provided that evening. Parents/guardians will receive updated information as registration fills.

An adventure-based experiential learning approach to camp. Ricochet, to a team, means moving lively and energetically with some level of unpredictability.Like “Ricochet,” middle school youth are finding their place in the world around them and are trying on many different roles. Often, leadership opportunities come unpredictably as well. With preparation, youth can identify their leadership skills that fit into those opportunities and be ready to accept the challenges as they come. The many changes military youth face in their daily lives can and does add to the confusion of being a young person struggling to find yourself. This camp program will be designed to specifically help Air Force youth gain the skills needed while reinforcing resiliency and responsibility.

Ricochet was created by Iowa State University and targets middle school youth in helping them identify leadership skills they may already possess and how to cultivate those skills to better themselves, their peers, their families and their communities. Youth are led through a series of fun interactive activities with the opportunity to debrief as they progress. The curriculum encourages youth to engage with others in their group and to show how theycan contribute as part of a team or stand tall as an individual.

Youth will learn by doing a variety of fun leadership activities and interactive games to help them identify and practice leadership skills. Skills are demonstrated during multiple sessions, field trips, and adventure challenges.

Youth will be invited to complete 6 days and 5 nights of Ricochet. The six days will follow a session schedule to complete the first stage in leadership development, Awareness. The schedule will include a college visit, 4-H club exposure experiences (Food challenge), and team building/challenge events as well as time to debrief and reflect through group conversations and journaling. The challenge course provides youth with an opportunity to use the skills they are learning to guide themselves and their peers through various obstacles. Paintball will be used to reinforce the teamwork and communication thought processes while horseback riding helps youth find purpose in responsibility and non-verbal communication skills. The visits to Texas A&M University will provide an opportunity for youth to explore post-secondary education and career goals that connect with their leadership strengths and/or how those skills can be used in their post-secondary education roles.
