More about Chris Cooney and Provenance Vineyards...
Chris Cooney grew up in Palo Alto, a beautiful town 40 minutes south of San Francisco, home to Stanford University and a number of top tech companies. “I spent much of my childhood outdoors playing soccer and other sports,” he says. After finishing high school he journeyed east to Massachusetts, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Amherst College.
After college Chris spent nine unexciting months in a cubicle at Intel before escaping to Europe for three months of travel. He returned home and took a job at a pharmaceutical consulting firm, working on spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations. “I quickly realized this wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life,” recalls Chris. “After a conversation with Paul Draper at Ridge Vineyards, I decided that my skills and interests might be better suited to winemaking.”
Chris attended the University of California, Davis, from 1999 to 2001, earning a master’s degree in enology. After an internship at Iron Horse and stints in Germany and Australia, he worked the 2002 harvest at Acacia and Dynamite. In early 2003 he met with Tom Rinaldi and soon after joined the Provenance Vineyards® team.
