RHoKSec stands for Random Hacks of Kindness (cyber)Security and it is part of the Random Hacks of Kindness community of over 7,000 innovators in over 30 countries making the world a better place by developing practical, open source technology solutions to respond to some of the most complex challenges facing humanity.
RHoKSec events differ from ordinary RHoK hackathons in that the focus is on privacy and security. Labs are set up to enable participants to audit existing humanitarian open source projects for security issues which might put their users at risk. Teams can work on penetration testing, code review, or security bug fixes on those existing projects, and reports are handed over to the project leads and/or community to help them address any issues found. There are also new development challenges presented for projects relating to security and privacy.
The Challenges:
Testing Taarifa civic infrastructure reporting tools for vulnerabilities.
This software is already being used to manage municipal water systems and other civic infrastructure in Tanzania. Soon it will be used for a new purpose, tracking land encroachment and pollution in indigenous reservation land in the Amazon jungle. We will have a laboratory set up for you to test based on the standard install instructions for the project.
Testing some of the security features in the Pidgin chat client.
We may have found some (ahem) problems already. Poke at the software with us and lets see if we can find some more.
Building requested security features for Pidgin
When we approached the Pidgin team about what we may have already found, they were super friendly. Then they asked us to help them build better security for the application.
Building apps for secure communications on FirefoxOS devices.
FirefoxOS devices are marketed to low income people and people living in low resource countries. We believe that those people deserve access to secure chat, secure telephone calls, and other tools like those available through the Guardian Project from Android devices. Help us make that a thing.
Designing a Jungle Network
An indigenous community in Ecuador would like to build a wireless network that will cover a million acres of land in the Amazon. There are some challenges, though. Hardwood trees block radio signals. There are no roads. Heavy rains may dislodge equipment. Animals may eat your infrastructure. There are bugs everywhere. Heat and humidity shorten the lifespan of digital equipment. Sound like a fun challenge? We think so!
The Random Hacks of Kindness community started in 2009 as a joint initiative between Microsoft, Google, Yahoo!, NASA, and the World Bank, and in 2015 it became a program of Geeks Without Bounds in order to ensure its ongoing support and sustainability. It accomplishes its goal of making the world a better place by defining problems, organizing hackathons, and ensuring projects are effectively deployed.
The first RHoKsec was held in Glasgow, Scotland in September of 2013 in order to address the security needs of humanitarian projects that were being developed and deployed in the rest of the RHoK community. This new type of event was intended to give cybersecurity students, professionals and enthusiasts an opportunity to practice the skills they were learning while providing a valuable service to projects in support of humanitarian work.
Geeks Without Bounds supports civic and humanitarian open source projects in low resource situations. We run hackathons to prototype new solutions and push existing projects forward. Through our accelerator program, we take teams through a six month mentorship cycle to bring good intentions to a state of deployment. We also run educational programs that help communities with low access to technology to build the skills and the local infrastructure to end the ongoing digital divide.
