Hacking for Humanity

Throughout the two days, we will be coding around real world problems from all over the world. RHoK has been working with subject matter experts around the world to develop problem statements address real world development and humanitarian challenges. These problem statements will be the hacking challenges thrown out to the developers at the RHoK Nyeri hackathon. See those statements as they develop at

At the end of the hackathon, we’ll invite you to share your RHoK application with the group with the potential to win prizes and see your work put to use on the ground to save lives and alleviate suffering.

What Do I Need?

We will provide facilities, power and refreshments to help you write your application. Just bring your laptop, ideas, and enthusiasm to complete the mix.

Random Hacks of Kindness RHoK DC

The Back Story

Random Hacks of Kindness is a joint effort founded by Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft, NASA and The World Bank, dedicated to bringing software developers together to respond to challenges facing humanity in the area of natural disaster risk.  We start with problem definitions created through consultations with NGOs, governments and experts in the field from around the world, then we invite hackers to a come together to organize and go to work putting their skills to use to solve those problems with software solutions that make a difference on the ground.  At a RHoK hackathon, new technologies are born, existing platforms are built upon, and innovative new ideas attract attention and support.  At the close of the hackathon, teams present the technologies they have developed and prizes are awarded.

The Current Situation

Help Earth Foundation HEF,  a District of Columbia non for profit corporation.  HEF was founded by socialprenuer and emergency responder, Nelson Jacobsen. The idea came to him after a variety of obstacles he experienced setting up and implementing the Tsunami Band Aid project, which successfully brought artists, clubs, charities and politicians together to support the Boxer Day Tsunami. During his work on this initiative, it became evident that having a foundation in which all of the elements (artists, charities, etc.) had relationships before they came together would have allowed for a better and more robust effort.
