invites you to:
ReWriting City Websites in Language You Write, Language You Understand
Connecting your questions with the city’s answers
TAKING PLACE ON
National Day of Civic Hacking
TAKING PLACE AT
PopupHood, 1423 Broadway
Have you ever tried to find information on our city website and failed, been frustrated and wasted time in order to find unclear information and huge PDFs with poor instructions? At ReWrite Oakland we will be changing that! Half the day will be spent brainstorming the common questions residents have for local government and half will be developing clear, human centered answers to those questions. We will have a brand new website available for our volunteers to publish to live on the day! This is another great way to create public-private partnerships that benefit our city and we want you to be part of it.
Come with questions! Pick your favorite answers! Or come with answers and ask us what the questions might be! Ex: Can I park on a yellow curb?
Rewrite information on the city’s website like you were emailing your grandmother
Bring friends and neighbors! This is about Oakland citizens coming together to make our city services more accessible
Know another language? Come help us translate!
LOOKING FOR INSPIRATION?
ReWrite Oakland will be based on a community effort in Honolulu called Honolulu Answers, a new approach that makes it easier for people to access city information and services. It works like Google -- ask a question and get the answer you're looking for, in plain language.
This event is open to anyone in the community, regardless of technical expertise.
If you have questions yourself that you would like answered you can also submit them here ahead of time!!! Share your pain!
National Day of Civic Hacking (#ndoch) - across the nation, citizens, software developers, and entrepreneurswill use publicly-releaseddata and technology to collaboratively solve challenges relevant to our neighborhoods, our cities, our states and our country.
Please consider walking, biking, or taking public transit to ReWrite Oakland. If you drive, there will be free parking for the event at the Clay Street Garage on 1414 Clay St (behind City Hall)

When & Where
OpenOakland, works to improve the lives of Oaklanders by advancing civic innovation and open government through community partnerships, engaged volunteers and civic technology.
We bring together coders, designers, data geeks, journalists, and city staff to collaborate on solutions to improve how our local government serves all people of Oakland. We draw on our wide range of expertise and perspectives to build open-source applications and working relationships that promote civic innovation and open government in Oakland.
Our projects range from events like CityCamp and the Open Government Pledge, to a community-based open-data portal and OpenDisclosure to apps that help you chart crime trends, submit FOIA requests, or adopt your local storm drain.
