The CCAR Recovery Coach Academy© is a 5-day intensive training academy focusing on providing individuals with the skills needed to guide, mentor and support anyone who would like to enter into or sustain long-term recovery from an addiction to alcohol or other drugs. Provided in a retreat like environment, the CCAR Recovery Coach Academy© prepares participants by teaching them active listening skills, to ask engaging questions, and discovering and managing their own set of problems.

CCAR Recovery Coach Academy© participants will:

  • Describe Recovery Coach role and functions
  • List the components, core values and guiding principles of recovery
  • Build skills to enhance relationships
  • Explore many dimensions of recovery and recovery coaching
  • Discover attitudes about self disclosure and sharing your story
  • Understand the stages of recovery
  • Describe the stages of change and their applications
  • Increase their awareness of culture, power and privilege
  • Address ethical and boundaries issues
  • Experience recovery wellness planning
  • Practice newly acquired skills


Ethical Considerations for Recovery Support Workers:

Participants will:

  • Understand what ethics are and why ethics are so important when performing Recovery Coach Services
  • Learn how to stay in your lane as a recovery coach
  • Understand the decision making process
  • Develop guidelines for making ethical decisions
  • Apply the new learning to your every day work as an Recovery Coach


HIV/ AIDs Prevention:

This one-day training is geared towards recovery coaches and substance abuse professionals and will provide participants with basic and updated information about HIV/AIDS and other STDs. This includes risk factors, modes of transmission, signs and symptoms, prevention, the relationship between HIV and stigma. This training will explore the relationship between substance use and HIV/AIDs as well as the correlation between mental health and HIV/AIDS. Additionally, this training will emphasize the benefits of counseling clients on the benefits of HIV testing.

Goals & Objectives, Participants will:

  • Increase foundational knowledge about HIV/AIDS
  • Describe how HIV is transmitted
  • Increase knowledge around signs and symptoms of HIV/AIDs
  • Explain the process and benefits of HIV testing.
  • Describe techniques for teaching harm reduction strategies to people who have co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Demonstrate how to assess a client’s risk for acquiring HIV/AIDS
  • Increase knowledge level about HIV/AIDS prevention
  • Explain the correlation between mental health and HIV/AIDS
  • Increase ability to discuss the inter-relationship of HIV and other STDs
  • Increase knowledge around relationship between HIV/AIDS and Substance Users
  • Explain the process and benefits of HIV testing
    • Demonstrate how to counsel a person from a recovery support worker role

SOS Suicide Prevention:

This presentation primarily focuses on the non-clinical role of suicide prevention in health care and recovery workers and provides real time suicide prevention efforts and methods. This training will provide an overview of mental health, mental illness, and its relationship to suicide. It will address risk factors to identify. This training also covers the relationship between substance use and suicide. Participants will learn what suicide is and what suicide prevention looks like. Participants will learn crisis response protocol and how to navigate a discussion around suicide. This training will discuss the roles of a recovery coach and suicide prevention versus the roles of a clinician. This training will also discuss post-vention support.

Objectives of this training:

  • Learn the definition of suicide and what it looks like in real time
  • Understanding ambivalence
  • Gain a strong understanding of mental health versus mental illness
  • Learn to recognize and understand risk factors and protective factors
  • Understanding substance use and mental health and how they relate to suicide prevention
  • Skills for intervening with individuals at risk and connecting them with appropriate resources
  • Review of best practices about restricting access to lethal means and safe messaging
  • Discussion of community resources
  • Identifying and engaging in conversations with people at risk
