ARTIST BIOS
Jeff Berkley
Jeff Berkley is known as one of the finest singer-songwriters San Diego has ever produced. He has a warm, melodic voice and a way with song hooks that are second to none, as heard in his solo performances and as a part of the duo, Berkley Hart, alongside fellow tunesmith Calman Hart. But that’s just one side of his musical career, with work as a sideman and as a producer just as prominent on his resume.
As a producer, songwriter, and performer, Jeff wears many hats, but he maintains that there is no favorite aspect of his career. Already an accomplished songwriter – he won the Kerrville New Folk Songwriter award in 1999 – in any way you engage with Jeff Berkley, he puts you at ease with his good humor then engages you with his experience, his ear, and his passion. Jeff Berkley is a native San Diegan who has made music his life.

Story & Tune
Aussie singer-songwriter Ben Grace and Californian poet Karyn Thurston met for the first time weeks after they first said I love you, a blush-worthy whirlwind love story that landed them in a creative partnership writing a torrent of original songs. Story & Tune is the marriage of her words and his melodies (though they’ve been known to switch roles from time to time.) Driven by folk-americana’s long history of lyrical storytelling, the harmony-driven duo’s songs are a unique blend of heart, ache, and laughter, all grounded in the unwavering belief that belonging is an essential human right.
Story & Tune are a blend of Woody Guthrie’s commitment to a better world with the rise and fall drama of a ballad by The Civil Wars. They’re the story you tell about an evening in Over the Rhine’s barn where too much whiskey leads to a flirty, irreverent guest appearance by Johnny & June. Whether they are sharing unforgettable modern folk originals about ghosts, good boundaries, and hard goodbyes, or leading a bar sing-along of your favorite cover tunes, you won’t leave a Story & Tune show without feeling a little seen, a little celebrated, and a little more hopeful than you did before you came.

Astra Kelly
Artist, songwriter, and Chicago native, Astra Kelly, is a pure talent with a lyric-based, melodic sound and soaring vocals. Eclectic in style and genre, her music draws from her soulful Chicago roots fused with indie folk and Americana. Her performances are passionate, full of energy, and a powerful expression of her art and sound. Her songs often mirror the beautiful grit of being alive and open the way for a thought provoking and emotive musical experience. She’s a career artist who has toured the country extensively, and has released ten records on her own label. In 2022, she embarked upon “The Making Music Tour,” an epic RV journey around the US to rediscover her creative mojo after the Pandemic, write a new record, and to allow space for grieving the loss of her Mom. The resulting album (summer 2023 release), “Soul Fires,” is nine songs that reflect spiritual/emotional healing and transformation, and embrace the power within universal love, the open road, nature, and the mysticism of life. Presently based in San Diego, CA., Astra is also a vocal and songwriting coach, has managed multiple recording studios, writes and produces music for other artists, and is a voice over talent represented by local agency Shaman Freitas. She’s also been a radio DJ and TV host. She is passionate about being in service through music, helping others tap into their creative source, and advocating for well being, personal transformation, and emotional freedom. As a facilitator for a rehabilitative songwriting workshop at Donovan State Prison, she’s experienced the profound nature of songwriting to provide an outlet for healing and growth for people from all walks of life. This inspired her workshop series, soulsong.life.

Joshua Taylor & the Unscene
Genre-bending singer-songwriter and guitarist Joshua Taylor is the 2023 recipient of two San Diego Music Awards, for Best Pop Album (Unscene) and Best Rock or Indie/Alternative Song ("Cars Don't Run Forever"). The album is produced by award-winning producer, singer-songwriter, touring and session player Jeff Berkley (Jason Mraz, Bob Weir, Jewel, Steve Poltz). Wayne Riker of the San Diego Troubadour notes, “The arrangements are crisp and well thought out… It’s Americana pop/rock at its best… [Unscene] will win your heart upon first listening and beyond.”
Taylor is also a member of Arizona-based band Ponderosa Grove, whose members include vocalist and Grammy-nominated songwriter Candace Devine (Christina Aguilera), and drummer Gigi Gonaway (Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, George Benson). Ponderosa Grove has performed several dates opening for Tedeschi Trucks Band, and has shared festival stages with Dawes and Fantastic Negrito.
A highly active and versatile performer, sideman, and session musician on the San Diego scene, Joshua is recognizable on guitar for his tasteful pocket, lush textures, and melodic soloing; vocally for his buttery, soulful style and adept arrangements; and as a songwriter for his evocative confessional lyricism and mature harmonic craft.
