Help or Hindrance? Ensuring Technology Increases Access to Justice - and Justice Itself
Technology can remove obstacles and open doors, but can also create obstacles and close doors. How can we make sure that technology used in the legal system not only increases access to justice - but justice itself - for everyone? How can we assure that fair and equal justice exists in both the process and the outcome?
In 2004 the Washington State Supreme Court adopted the Washington Access to Justice (ATJ) Technology Principles, which apply to the entire Washington State justice system, including the judiciary, the lawyers, and all the people, state and local, who work in or with the system or are served by the system. These ATJ Technology Principles have guided the system and applicable laws and rules since then.
But, now it's 2017.
13 years since the adoption of the original ATJ Technology Principles.
13 years of their implementation and application.
13 years in which technology has evolved and changed.
The iPhone was released just 10 years ago.
It's time to evaluate and update the ATJ Technology Principles.
We invite you to a thoughtful and practical event where you will have an opportunity to rethink and revise the Principles with technologists, justice system workers, client and community representatives, and others.
We will begin the event with an interactive panel focused on technological innovations and changes impacting people and communities, especially those who experience poverty, disability and injustice. Then we’ll roll up our sleeves and begin to update and revise the ATJ Technology Principles!
