Event description

Description

This hands-on workshop will build the capacity of practitioners working in the environmental education / outdoors field to craft compelling stories about their organization's work using the frame of a shared narrative developed in collaboration by Blue Sky members and partners. Workshop content will include the art and science of storytelling, audience identification and empathy, the elements of story structure, tailoring your story for different media, best practices in strategic storytelling, and hands-on work in small groups. Participants will build, share and reflect on a story that communicates how their work contributes to healthy communities for all.

Workshop facilitator: Susan Pierson-Brown, Seven November, Inc.

Susan Pierson-Brown is founder and principal of Seven November, a purpose-driven strategic communications consultancy. She was previously senior communications advisor to Paul G. Allen, serving as head of communications for Vulcan, Inc. and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundations. She has over 20 years of public relations experience, including designing initiatives for Nike, the Gates Foundation, Blue Cross, Time Warner, and Microsoft. Susan partnered with Blue Sky Funders Forum on Rethink Outside, leading the research, testing, and drafting of the shared narrative messaging.

Rethink Outside is a call to action for all who believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to enjoy time outdoors, because when people connect with nature we all benefit. Together, we can unify and amplify the growing movement to lift up the benefits of time spent outdoors as a basic human right. In doing so, we can reshape the prevailing public narratives around time spent in nature and engage new partners and allies. Coordinated by Blue Sky Funders Forum and informed by the voices of hundreds of stakeholders and allies, the new shared narrative leverages and shares communications research, tools, and strategies to tell a new story and engage new partners to bring the promise of healthy communities to all. Together, we aspire to create a future where everyone has positive experiences outdoors and shares the joy, health, growth, and sense of community that come with it. Rethink Outside with us.
