Rethinking Immigration

Bertha will explain how the immigration process is in need of an overhaul, and not in the way you think.

Bertha Lewis is the Founder and President of The Black Institute (TBI), an action "think-tank" non-profit organization. Lewis founded TBI in 2010 to holistically address systematic issues faced by people of color, both within the United States and throughout the Diaspora. Lewis has been an influential leader within the non-profit and political sector for over 20 years. She is the former CEO and Chief Organizer of ACORN, one of the largest community organizations during its existence responsible for organizing low-income Americans. Lewis' tenure at ACORN has equipped her for insuperable challenges that have contributed to her success.

In 2014, Lewis was named in City & State's annual list of the top 100 most influential & powerful political leaders in New York City. She has been featured in Essence magazine's 2011 list of 28 Most Influential Black Women. Ms. Lewis was also named by Crain's magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential Women of New York 2007, and one of the "Influentials" in politics by New York magazine in 2006. For her outstanding community and activism efforts, Ms. Lewis received the 2005 New York State Black and Puerto Rican Legislators, Inc. Leon Bogues award. She is a recipient of the 2004 Citizen Activist Award of the Gleitsman Foundation for her work in public education reform. Most recently, she was the 2014 recipient of The Caribbean Images TV, 18th Annual MLK Community Service Award. Ms. Lewis continues to be a guest on a myriad of radio and television shows, including Steven Colbert, WKPN in Connecticut, Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network show and MSNBC's, UP with Chris Hayes, and All In with Chris Hayes, among others.

As a distinguished leader, Ms. Lewis is devoted in her pursuit to tackle immigrant rights, economic equality, environmental justice and bettering the educational system. She prides herself on her hard work and dedication; she believes it is her civic duty and purpose to over-come the unremitting fight for equality.
