DESCRIPTION:

This two-day training is specifically designed for criminal justice professionals including judges, attorneys, probation and corrections officers, victim witness advocates, and others working in the justice field. This workshop will review the theoretical framework of the current justice system while introducing participants to the fundamental principles of restorative justice and approaches. Restorative approaches seek a balanced approach to the needs of the victim, wrongdoer, and community through processes that preserve the safety and dignity of all. Participants will learn about restorative practices, including Circles and restorative conferences, which provide restorative approaches to addressing harm and conflict. This training will explore the use of restorative practices within the criminal justice system to, among other things: engage victims and community members in the criminal justice process; address and repair harm; foster meaningful acceptance of responsibility; explore alternatives to prosecution and incarceration; transform corrections settings; and promote successful re-entry to the community. Participants will learn about programs currently utilizing restorative practices at various stages such as, at arrest, post-conviction, sentencing, and during community supervision.

The workshop will provide participants with learning through facilitated dialogue, demonstrations, videos, practical experience, and strategic planning. This training will prepare participants to explore the use of restorative practices within their contexts and provide foundational planning.
