Event description

Description

There are many challenges when treating patients with craniofacial anomalies, post-traumatic injuries, and post-surgical resections including extensive bone and soft tissue deformities. Therefore, treatment necessitates an interdisciplinary team approach with specialists in medicine, dentistry and allied health fields. Anaplastologists provide facial prosthetic rehabilitation. Custom facial prostheses utilize bone anchored implant retention where the removable silicone prosthesis is connected using a bar and clip or magnet system. Such prostheses not only help improve function and esthetics, but can also provide the patient with psychosocial healing and a renewed sense of self-esteem.

Digital technologies have made a substantial shift in the way health care teams conceptualize and provide reconstructive treatment. Computer-driven systems have allowed the adaptation of 3D imaging, simulation planning programs, surgical navigation, and 3D printing, thus helping identify new, accurate, cost and time-efficient means of providing patient treatment globally. This presentation will discuss the applications of advanced technology in facial prosthetic reconstruction and future direction of the field of Anaplastology.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Understand reconstruction options available for patients with acquired or inherited craniofacial defects. Various retention methods utilized in facial prosthetics and in the importance of thorough pre-operative implant planning will be discussed.
  • Discover a variety of advanced digital technologies, and how they may be applied to various dental sub specialties. The presentation will highlight a variety of data acquisition systems, surgical simulation and implant planning platforms, computer assisted image guided surgery, and rapid manufacturing technologies.
  • Explore the importance of a team approach when treating patients with inherited or acquired craniofacial deformities.
