Description

A symposium designed for Greenville Health System (GHS) respiratory therapists but open to nurses or therapists who work in labor and delivery or with the newborn. Respiratory Care Practitioners in the state of South Carolina will obtain six continuing education credits for the symposium. It will be held on 2 concurrent Saturdays in September. It will be held at Patewood Memorial Hospital on September 15 and September 22, 2018 inside the Terrace Cafe. The symposium is free of charge. During lunch, there will be a "Respiratory Sputum Bowl Competition" (rules to be posted prior to the event) in which the winner will receive a gift card for a massage at GHS's Life Center or one 50 minute massage or facial from Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa in Greenville.

The symposium topics include:

1. Fetal Lung Development - a clinical review of fetal lung development & post-delivery challenges

2. Beyond the APGAR - the various assessment tools related to the examination of the newborn

3. Critical Congenital Heart Disease - understanding CCHD and the screening algorithm for CCHD

4. Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn - issues related to TTN or Respiratory Distress Syndrome type 2

5. Devices of the newborn nursery - an overview of telemedicine devices, infant warmers, rescusitators and more

6. Effects of Group B, Chorioamnionitis, and Magnesium on the newborn

7. Neonatal Complications - case studies from the newborn nursery presented by GHS pediatricians

8. Car Seat Challenge and the Apnea Monitor - scoring of a car seat test with apnea monitor hands on training

9. NRP Highlights - an overview from the latest NRP guidelines and how to develop a performance checklist

10. Level One and Level Two nurseries - procedural variances of the level one vs. the level two nursery

11. The EMR - useful tips and information on effectively using the electronic medical record - (EPIC specific)

The presenters will be announced at a later date but include Respiratory Care Practitioners with NPS and/or advanced degrees, Registered Nurses (BSN) with neonatal experience and licensed pediatricians certified by the American Board of Pediatrics

After the symposium, from 3:15 pm until 4:45, Patewood Memorial respiratory therapists and designated float pool staff will complete their mandatory related yearly competencies.
