This premier presentation will present the principles and clinical utility of Respiratory Muscle Strength Training (RMST), outlining the theories supporting the treatment, report on past and current outcome data, present treatment techniques for multiple patient groups for both inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength training. Ruddy and Sapienza bring pragmatic information that is informative and interesting to clinicians worldwide.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will identify key anatomical and physiologic components of respiratory, swallow, and cough.

  • Participants will understand the effectiveness of respiratory muscle strength training for patient care.

  • Participants will demonstrate the ability to assess key measures of respiratory muscle strength and understand how these measures relate to the development of respiratory muscle strength training protocols.

  • Participants will demonstrate knowledge of available devices for respiratory muscle strength training and will be able to describe advantages / disadvantages to each as well as applicability to specific patient groups.

  • Participants will demonstrate the ability to plan and implement respiratory muscle strength training protocols for patients.

  • Participants will demonstrate the ability to assess respiratory muscle strength training outcomes in terms of measures of respiratory muscle strength, swallow, and cough.

10:15-11:00 Airway Protection

11:00-11:15 Break

11:15-12:15 Airway Protection, continued (Breathing, Cough, and Swallow)

12:15-1:15 Lunch (provided)

1:15- 3:15 Applications for Assessment & Treatment, Demonstration( use, troubleshooting, measurement)

3:15- 3:30 Break

3:30- 5:30 Cases and Critical Thinking

  • EMST150 device will be provided by Aspire Products, LLC

  • Handouts in digital format

  • Respiratory muscle strength training devices and assessment tools will be on hand for demonstration
