Event description

Description

26 years ago, Lorena Gallo Bobbitt’s desperate act of self-defense became a lurid media spectacle. Sexism and sensationalism drowned out the real story: one of a shy young immigrant woman enduring horrific domestic violence.

Now, with a new documentary from Jordan Peele and her foundation behind her, Lorena is speaking out in her own resounding voice.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, go beyond the headlines to meet the real Lorena: a proud survivor and advocate for all those affected by domestic violence.

All proceeds go to Casa Myrna to fund shelter and supports for survivors of domestic violence and their children.

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

No. People of all ages are welcome to attend the event, but parents and caretakers should be aware that intense subject matter, including domestic & sexual violence, will be discussed.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

We recommend using public transportation to get to this event as street parking is extremely scarce. The venue is less than 5 minutes on foot from either Arlington St or Copley Station (both Green B/C/D/E). Park St station is a 15 minute walk away. Alternatively, the nearby Back Bay Garage offers overnight parking for $10 after 5 PM.

Are scholarship tickets and group ticketing discounts available?

Yes, free or reduced cost scholarship tickets and discounts for group (5+) ticket purchases are available as needed. Please email Leela at dev@casamyrna.com to learn more or submit a request.

Is this venue accessible for people with reduced mobility?

The Sanctuary of the Church of the Covenant is fully wheelchair accessible. There will be signs and staff volunteers to direct you to the accessible entrance with a wheelchair ramp, as well as to the accessible bathrooms inside. A seating section near the accessible entrance and the front of the venue will be marked as reserved for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility and/or other disabilities such as auditory or visual impairment. Please contact Leela at dev@casamyrna.org with any accessibility questions.

Will there be support available for those who may need to take a break or speak to someone about feelings or concerns raised by the event?

Yes! The intense subject matter of this event may bring up equally intense feelings or memories for some audience members, even those who may not be expecting it. It is okay to step out of the venue to take a break or a walk, make a phone call to a supportive loved one--you will be re-admitted. There will also be a quiet room (marked with signs) within the Sanctuary where you can spend as much time as you need. In the quiet room, Casa Myrna advocates will be available to answer questions, listen, and provide support and information. After the event ends, you can call SafeLink, MA's statewide 24/7 domestic violence hotline, at any time for support, conenctions to resources, or just a listening ear: 1.877.785.2020.

May I bring in food or beverages to eat and drink?

No. The Church of the Covenant does not allow eating or drinking (other than water) in the Sanctuary.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Please email Leela at dev@casamyrna.org with any questions or media inquiries.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, it's also fine to display your e-ticket on your phone screen.
