Great leaders move us. They move us through a basic human process- our emotions. Although they talk of strategy and competition, the great leaders establish a deep emotional connection with others called resonance. They are literally in tune with others around them. Their own levels of emotional intelligence allow them to create and nurture these resonant relationships. They use their EI as a path to resonant leadership through mindfulness, hope and compassion.

Unfortunately, most people in leadership positions lose their effectiveness over time. Because of the cumulative effect of the damage from chronic stress, effectiveness in leadership and maintaining resonant relationships is not sustainable. But, humans can revive themselves, neurologically, hormonally, and emotionally. This process of renewal can reverse the ravages of chronic stress. Through renewal experiences a person can become more cognitive, perceptually and emotionally open. They can innovate and learn. They can make informed, astute decisions. They can be open to motivating others.

This session will address the following:

What is a great leader and how do we sustain effectiveness?

  1. The experience of "resonant leadership" in an organization, the role of emotional intelligence, mindfulness, hope and compassion
  2. Understanding the cycle of stress/sacrifice and renewal at the neural and behavioral levels

How do we develop it in ourselves and others?

  1. A process for developing sustainable improvement on EI and resonant leadership
  2. How to coach others to develop EI, resonant leadership, mindfulness, hope and compassion



Presenter bio

Richard Boyatzis is Distinguished University Professor, professor in Departments of Organizational Behavior, Psychology, and Cognitive Science at Case Western Reserve University, Adjunct Professor at ESADE. He has authored more than 200 articles and 8 books, including The Competent Manager, Primal Leadership with Daniel Goleman & Annie McKee, and Resonant Leadership, with McKee. His MOOCs have over 700,000 enrolled from over 215 countries.

Using his Intentional Change Theory (ICT), Boyatzis studies sustained, desired change at all levels of human endeavor from individuals, teams, organizations, communities and countries. Before becoming a professor, he was CEO of the research consulting company McBer and Company (now part of the Hay Group/Korn Ferry) for 11 years and COO of the market research company Yankelovich, Skelly & White for three years. He was ranked #9 Most Influential International Thinker by HR Magazine in 2012 and 2014.
