ABSTRACT

This workshop focuses on social and infrastructure components of resiliency in smart communities. From a social perspective, it will explore whether citizens use social media or public agencies to understand disruptions in transportation and use the source to shape the actions they will take. Following on this theme, we will explore how data generated from virtual communities can help detect potential collective actions that can improve real-time responsiveness during the disaster and recovery. Continuing on community involvement, we will explore methods to create an environmental data collection pods that will be established and networked through STEM and citizen science programs to monitor the disaster and the recovery. The session also will explore how energy harvesting can ensure connectivity to maintain social and sensor networks during the disaster and the recovery, enhancing the resilience of the community.

FACILITATORS

Gregg Vesonder, Industry Professor, Program Director of Software Engineering and Director of the ADS Lab at Stevens Institute of Technology

Gregg Vesonder is an Industry Professor, Program Director of Software Engineering and Director of the ADS Lab at Stevens Institute of Technology.
Vesonder received a Bell Labs Fellow for "pioneering work in artificial intelligence applications and technology." He served as Executive Director of the Mobile and Pervasive Systems Research Department at AT&T Labs Research.
His current research activities emphasize software, software engineering and the relationship of small systems (embedded, sensor-based) to large scale systems particularly in Cyber-Physical and Socio-Technical domains. Vesonder is applying these techniques, learning by doing and social media, to STEM for grade school and beyond.
