Event description

Description

Flint ReCAST is hosting a mini research conference: Changing the Narrative in Vulnerable Communities. The conference will use multidisciplinary panel-style discussions to address how vulnerable communities move forward after experiencing community wide trauma, with an emphasis on the narratives that we as researchers navigate in serving various communities through our work.

The conference will include 3 approximately 1 hour multidisciplinary research panels of 3-5 researchers. Topics will address (1) communication of research, (2) defining futures to advance vulnerable communities facing widespread chronic and complex stressors/traumas, and (3) research approaches based on community-engaged principles to advance this work.

Panel 1: Communication in vulnerable communities affected by trauma.

Research panelists will discuss various communication strategies (messaging and delivery) used to share research findings in vulnerable community spaces. The panel will also address definitions of resiliency, being underserved, and the role of intersectionality, recognizing the range of difficulties researchers encounter while working in traumatized community spaces.

Panel 2: Defining futures after injury from complex community trauma.

Research panelists will address the layered and cumulative impact of injuries in the context of major community traumas like human trafficking, the opioid crisis, and community violence. We will also address the interpersonal aspects of injuries and trauma, including impact on individual capacity to handle daily responsibilities (e.g. parenting, teaching, working, self-care, etc).

Panel 3: Community-engaged research and efforts to advance communities to overcome trauma.

Research panelists discuss the ways that vulnerable communities with extensive trauma histories have planned to move forward and overcome trauma. This panel will also examine community-engaged research opportunities for mind-body and mental health in community (non-clinical) and clinical settings.

Researchers are encouraged to attend. Please email questions to projectrecast@cityofflint.com.
