Description

A free showing of the film, RESILIENCE, will take place at NCCC on Thurs, Sept 26, 2109. Registration begins at 5:30pm, screening at 6pm, followed by a Community Conversation. The screening is a collaboration of NCCC, the CT Office of Rural Health, EdAdvance Nurturing Families and Family Strides. Please join us!

Researchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. As the documentary Resilience reveals, toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death. While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk, no segment of society is immune. Resilience, however, also chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back. Trailblazers in pediatrics, education, and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress—and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that occur before age 18. They include physical and emotional abuse and neglect, parental mental illness, substance use, divorce, incarceration, and domestic violence. Stressful childhood experiences can alter brain development and have life-long effects on health and behavior. Come explore how reducing ACEs can help prevent child maltreatment, produce healthier outcomes, and save costs.

Producers Karen Pritzker and James Redford have many documentary and feature filmmaking credits to their names. Resilience, Pritzker’s third documentary with James Redford, premiered to sold-out crowds at Sundance in 2016.
