Event description

Description

DISCOVER innovative approaches to neighborhood organizing and climate resilience.

ENGAGE with local governments and community-based organizations about resilient neighborhoods

CELEBRATE the NorCal Resilience Network’s Circle of Collaborators

JOIN the NorCal Resilience Network, EBMUD, government officials from the City of Berkeley and neighborhood organizers for a tour and cross-sector dialogue about building resilient neighborhoods. Learn about the Resilient Hubs Initiative, a project which has the potential to dramatically scale up ecological resilience, while strengthening community in neighborhoods across the East Bay and beyond (more below).

We’ll also celebrate the reactivation of the Network’s innovative membership model - the Circle of Collaborators - with food and drinks. We look forward to discovering, engaging, and celebrating with you!

Thank you to EBMUD, which pilot tested the Resilient Hubs model last year by spearheading work parties across six East Bay sites that built water conservation projects and is sponsoring this tour.

THE PROJECT:

The NorCal Resilience Network’s Resilient Hubs Initiative is an exciting new project that combines the power of community with the urgent need to transform sites - homes, schools, community gardens and neighborhood centers - into permaculture-inspired, regenerative places that are “ready for anything”, better prepared for natural disasters, climate change and other stresses in our community.

1 pm — Tour and discussion at Berkeley Youth Alternatives

Learn about BYA’s innovative youth programs (including its garden and orchard), and its role as a City of Berkeley’s Community Resilience Center. Then be inspired by a Cross-Sector Discussion: NorCal Resilience will introduce the Resilience Hubs Initiative and innovative membership model. A discussion will be facilitated with governmental and community leaders.

Scheduled guests include City of Berkeley Council Member Cheryl Davila, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Khin Chin, EBMUD Water Conservation Manager Richard Harris, and Resilience Hubs Leader Jessica Bates.

3 pm: Ashby Garden Tour (1376 Ashby Garden)

Bike or carpool over to another Resilience Hub, the Ashby Garden (about a mile away) for a tour of the garden and its innovative water conservation features. Continue the conversation about Resilience Hubs and how to get involved in this project in your neighborhood or city.

4 pm-5 pm: Happy Hour and Celebration

We will end the afternoon with food and drinks to celebrate the revitalization of the NorCal Resilience Network’s Circle of Collaborators. Connect with new members and learn what’s next for our Network.

Join us after the gathering for dinner and a concert!

5 pm—(Casual dinner outing optional prior to the evening event)

8 pm—PLACE for Sustainable Living Benefit Concert at the New Parish (1743 San Pablo Ave, Oakland, California 94612
