Event description
At OUTSIDE, our goal is to shift the Florida landscape paradigm towards more sustainable landscaping.

About this Event

Registration is limited. Register early to ensure your space on the tour.

Part of the OUTSIDE Collaborative 2021 Tour Series, this self-guided field tour will explore single-family residential homes inside the Villages which have been converted from turfgrass dominated conventional landscapes to Florida Friendly Landscapes with several homes utilizing up to 100% native plants. Attendees will be given a route and asked to drive themselves to each address. Educational signage and experts will be stationed along the route to answer questions. A formal discussion will be held after the home visits during lunch with Steve Turnipseed, Marc Godts, and members of the Florida Native Plant Society Villages Chapter.

Learn More About the Tour

Self-Guided Tour of Residential Landscapes

Attendees will be given a route and addresses of 10-12 homes. Attendees will carpool in personal vehicles to each home and will determine how much time to spend in each location. Signage will be in place and expert speakers will be stationed at some of the homes to answer questions along the way.

These links provide a preview of two landscapes on this tour:

Tour participants will participate in a plant scavenger hunt, which challenges them to find 25 species at the sites along the tour. To make this easier for those not familiar with native plant species, we will provide a plant list for each residence, and most sites have plant labels.

Lunch + Presentation

Attendees will meet up at the Brownwood Paddock Square after the self-guided tour for a lunch presentation. Steve Turnipseed, Marc Godts, and members of the Florida Native Plant Society Villages Chapter will discuss the process of converting the conventional yards into Florida Friendly and Native yards. Topics will include:

  • Organizing grassroots enthusiasm for sustainable landscapes in the community
  • Working with the architectural review board and community design standards to allow Florida Friendly and Native landscapes
  • Design principles
  • Plant Pallet
  • Installation practices and cost
  • Maintenance practices and cost
  • Neighborhood and social perceptions of these landscapes
  • University of Florida studies on water use
