Description

Reservoir Challenge: Saturday June 8th, Oradell Reservoir, Haworth, NJ

440 Lake Shore Drive, Haworth, NJ 07641
Turn-by-Turn Directions

*Quick note: reserving boats vs. registering people. When registering for the races/open paddle, you are reserving the desired number of boats, not registering number of paddlers. When registering for the fishing derby, you are registering the number of people in your party.

Presented by Hackensack Riverkeeper and SUEZ Water
One day only! Come make a splash on the beautiful Oradell Reservoir! Join us for a day of races, open paddling, and catch-and-release fishing on the Oradell Reservoir in Haworth, New Jersey. Whether you’re bringing your own boat or renting one of ours, entering a race or registering for the open paddle, we look forward to seeing you at the Reservoir on June 8th – rain or shine! All proceeds from the event support Hackensack Riverkeeper's mission to protect, preserve and restore the Hackensack River Watershed.

Go Fish! 8am-12pm
**New** Coinciding with NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife's Free Fishing Day, bring the family down for a FREE catch-and-release derby along the banks of the Oradell Reservoir. No license required! Bait provided; limited rods and reels on loan, courtesy of Hudson River Fishermen's Association; bring your own equipment if you have it! And, when the derby ends at Noon, stick around for a fun fly-fishing demo! Derby prizes will be given out at 1pm for first fish, biggest fish, most fish, and more!

A Day at the Races: 9am
Test your mettle (for a medal!) in the 5K or 10K paddle race. Awards will be given based on vessel type (single kayak, tandem kayak, canoe, specialty outrigger) – with separate men's and women's classes for single kayak category only!

Corporate Cup Challenge: 11am
Is your company looking for a fun and unique team-building activity? Register your four-person team in this exciting kayak relay race today! The Corporate Cup consists of three legs – alternating 1/2 and 1 mile, solo and tandem. Four team members needed. All materials provided. Let us know if you need a "ringer" to complete your team!

Mayors Cup Challenge: Noon
After the Corporate Cup, you won’t want to miss the always-entertaining Mayors Cup Challenge. Watch as local elected officials go paddle-to-paddle for the coveted Mayor’s Cup. Will your mayor win? Come cheer (or jeer – we won’t tell)! Spectators welcome!

Open Paddle Session: 1:30pm
Join us in the afternoon for an open paddle on the reservoir. Your kayak/canoe or ours, come and enjoy the beauty of the Oradell Reservoir. New this year: fishing permitting from your own kayak or canoe. Be sure to register early, as rentals are limited!

Landlubbers Unite!
All this fun PLUS live music, food for participants, and free landside children’s activities are “on tap” at Reservoir Challenge. Friends and spectators are welcome. Interested in having a landside table to promote your organization? Call Caitlin at 201-968-0808 or email outreach@hackensackriverkeeper.org.

GUIDELINES

For security reasons, no cameras will be allowed beyond the gates into the reservoir area.

All kayaks and canoes must be washed before entering the reservoir, to avoid introduction of invasive species (we will have a wash station set-up for participants bringing their own boats).

5K and 10K races will follow the same course (1 lap = 5K, 2 laps = 10K). Races will have a running start.

The first boat across the finish line in each race in each of the following categories will receive an award:
· SK1: Single Recreational Kayak (14’ and under) separate Men's and Women's classes
· SK2: Single Racing Kayak (over 14’) separate Men's and Women's classes
· TK: Tandem Kayak
· C: Canoe
· S: Specialty Outrigger Boat

All paddlers must wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD), in good and serviceable condition and of appropriate size for the intended user for the duration of the Races or Open Paddles.
Paddles, PFD’s and whistles will be provided to those who rent a boat. Anyone bringing their own boat must provide their own paddle, PFD and whistle.

Safety boats will be on the water to provide assistance, however paddlers must stop to provide assistance to any other paddler who appears to be in distress.

REFUNDS
This event is a fundraiser, with all proceeds going directly to Hackensack Riverkeeper, a clean water advocacy organization, to help continue our mission to protect, preserve, and restore the Hackensack River Watershed. Your registration is a donation to the organization and is non-refundable. In the event you are unable to attend, we will issue a voucher that you may use at either of our paddling centers or at a future 2018 or 2019 special event. This event is rain or shine and will only be cancelled due to lightning. Call 201-968-0808 within 48 hours of the event to release your rental and arrange for your voucher.

Reservoir Challenge is one of the few opportunities the public has to paddle the Oradell Reservoir, one of its most important and picturesque natural resources. Thank you to SUEZ and the Borough of Haworth for giving us the opportunity to enjoy this jewel of the Hackensack River Watershed.
